This Part of Florida Doesn't Need a Beach

Most people drive through the Panhandle on the way to somewhere else.

That's fine. More room for the rest of us.

What's out here — between the interstate and the river — is the part of Florida that doesn't show up on travel blogs. Rolling pine forest. Back roads that go quiet in about a mile. The Choctawhatchee running clear and low in the fall. Public land in every direction. Towns where people still know each other's names.

Bonifay's got one of the biggest rodeos in the Southeast every year. Ponce de Leon Springs will cool you off in any season. Falling Waters State Park outside Chipley has the only real waterfall in Florida — worth seeing at least once. And Holmes Creek, right here in our backyard, is one of the prettiest paddles in the state.

You don't have to go far to find something worth your time out here. You just have to know where to look.

River Bend is going to be one of those places. A stop that's worth making — whether you're a local running errands or passing through and ready to slow down for a few minutes.
